The large Baklaniy Island is located in the middle of the Bay near the Eastern shore. There are seven Islands in the Chivyrkui Gulf today, and the largest is the Baklaniy island. It is a national landscape monument of nature.
Many years ago this island was one of the largest breeding grounds of cormorants, which in Russian language are called “baklans”. A settlement of the bronze age-Neolithic-was found on the island. There are ticks of I. D. Chersky (1878) and V. Lomakin. The island is protected by the Zabaikalsky national Park, so you can visit the island only with the permission of the administration. And you can stay here only for 30 minutes.
The largest island of the Chivyrkui Gulf is amazing with its beauty. The island of cormorants is located on the Eastern shore of lake Baikal. The name of the island was due to cormorants, that were nesting on the island. Now there are no cormorants. The island is a landscape monument of nature, so staying here is limited and allowed only with the permission of employees of the Zabaikalsky national Park.
This beautiful creation of nature is really fascinating. It offers stunning views of the Svyatoy Nos Peninsula and the “Holy sea”, as it has long been called by the locals.
