Pokoinitsky Stone Island (The Stone of the Dead) is an island with a grim name that he received from the village that was located nearby, it was called Kurbulik, which means “dead” from the Evenk.
Island Pokoinitsky Stone is located near the village Kurbulik, which translated from the Evenki “dead”. There are many versions about the origin of the name.
According to the most realistic version, in the very first description of Baikal, the Cape was described as dead, protected from storm and wind, that is.
There are also several short versions. For example, once the boat with the dead fishermen was thrown out on its shore, or that the Cape was a cemetery with crosses, or that once the settlement of Evenks died here because of an unknown disease.
But the most popular version is about the death of a group of fishermen due to the fact that they ate poisonous viziga. Viziga is a part of a spine of sturgeon. If the fish is fresh, it is harmless, but if the sturgeon is dead, the viziga becomes very poisonous, and that’s why fishermen died. There is a simplified version, that fishermen died after they ate fat sturgeon and washed it down with cold water.
